Uric acid (UA) testing has been conducted for years. The common method is for doctors or GPs to take blood samples from patients who are either displaying gout symptoms or are on gout medication, analysing it, and providing a result of the UA levels back to the patient. A recent discussion with a group of gout sufferers, however, revealed a rising interest in people wanting to test themselves from home.
A group of gout sufferers recently held an open discussion in an online gout community on how they measure their uric acid (UA) levels. Many of them used the common method of booking an appointment for a blood test once every three months through their doctor or GP.
Others, however, conducted uric acid tests at home – similar to the way that diabetic people check their blood glucose levels using home testing devices. This was fascinating to discover because there might be some potential benefits in testing more regularly from home, such as helping sufferers identify what triggers their gout attack by monitoring increases in uric acid following particular meals or life events.
Following this theme of home testing approaches, the group went on to share which devices or kits they used to measure their uric acid levels at home. Here is what they recommended (ranked in order of most popular to least popular).
Some users reported that UASure had a good accuracy rating, however, we can’t recommend which kit is better than another at this stage or how their accuracy level compares to the traditional approach.
We will, however, look into running some experiments with home uric acid testing kits in the future and share our findings through this blog.
